Adaptogens are a group of healing plants, which work to help balance and protect the body’s natural functions, reboot the adrenals and help regulate the thyroid.

Balance is key for maintaining good health, and adaptogens promote exactly that by working to balance out the body’s systems (endocrine system aka hormones and immune system), rather than just simply increasing levels of something. They’re also going to be your body and mind’s best friend when it comes to managing stress. The listed benefits are a few of the reasons these plants are gaining such popularity.

3 Things a Plant Needs to be an Adaptogen:

  1. Must be non-toxic

  2. Must have some type of influence over the body’s organs and systems, meaning that it has a normalizing impact on the physiology.

  3. When normalizing the functions of the organs and systems, it does not interfere with the normal functioning of the organism more than is necessary to increase a non-specific resistance.

3 Ayurvedic Adaptogens:

Ashwaganda is a sanskrit word that literally translates to "the smell of a horse." While in tablet or tincture form, the smell of Ashwaganda isn't that noticeable, the plant itself has a smell reminiscent to livestock. In addition, the plant is known for the strength and vigor it provides the body and mind, much like a healthy stallion. Ashwagnda helps the body and mind manage stress, by actually lowering cortisol levels.
