The three gunas: sattva, rajas, tamas, are the primary qualities of nature. They show our mental and spiritual state, through which we can measure our propensity for psychological problems.
The Sattva Guna is the subtlest density of nature. It is the state of being where we find peace, contentment, joy, compassion, equanimity, trust, calmness, gratitude, fearlessness, selflessness, purity, knowledge, and wisdom.
In Yoga and Ayurveda, this is the state of being we strive for through our yoga practice, diet, and lifestyle. However, while Ayurveda tells us to bring in the opposite qualities to balance the doshas, we need to bring in like qualities to increase our Sattvic state. This means we need to eat light and organic food, refrain from drugs, alcohol, caffeine, do work that gives back to others, be mindful of the things we watch and read, surround ourselves with good and kind hearted people, and meditate and do yoga daily.
The concept is actually quite simple: the more you are exposed to a guna, the more that guna increase or grows in your mind. Therefore, the more sattvic qualities you expose yourself to and practice, the more Sattvic you will become. This also holds true for Tamas and Rajas.
Keep in mind, the Gunas are part of both Ayurveda and Yogas philosophy, and just as they are a practice, so is the journey of increasing our Sattvic state. Finding our way to this state of being isn’t about creating more pain and suffering for ourselves, but rather to find peace and joy from within.
The Gunas are the tip of the ice berg when it comes to using Ayurveda to cultivate a more balanced state of being.
