3 Ways to Declutter your Life

Whether it is in our mind or in our space, clutter can weigh us down.
A study done by the University of New Mexico in 2016 examined how clutter compromises an individual’s perception of home, and ultimately feelings of satisfaction with life. The underlying premise of the study was that because many people identify so closely with their home environments, the extent to which it’s cluttered can interfere with the pleasure they experience when being in that environment.

3 Ways to Declutter your Life

1. Breathe
So simple, and yet so effective. Take a few deep breaths, and then for a few minutes, just focus on your breathing. Concentrate on your breathing as it comes into your body, and then as it goes out. It has a calming effect, especially if you continue to return your focus to your breath when your mind strays. It also allows other thoughts to just float away.
2. Figure out what makes you tick – those things you just can’t seem to mentally let go of.
To do: Draw a vertical line down a piece of paper, label the left side “Bad Thoughts” and the right side “Good Thoughts.”
On each side, begin to list all of those thoughts (doesn’t matter if they are from 20 years ago or an hour ago) that seem to be stuck on replay with in your mind. For those thoughts that seem to be weighing you down or holding you back, say to yourself, “I delete, un-create, and release the weight of [state particular thought].”
3. Pick one single drawer or closet and clear it out in less than 20 minutes.
It’s funny how, whether or not someone else can see it, a messy closet or drawer can weigh us down. We know it is a mess and we know we should clean it out, but it seems so daunting. Today, you’re going to pick one closet or one drawer and clear it out in under 20 minutes. Have 3 bins set up for this assignment – one for garbage, recycle, and donation.  Set a timer to keep you on track, as we all know the hardest part of this is the letting go.
