An Ayurvedic Perspective on Eye Health

The eyes are a remarkable part of the body! They absorb and transmit an array of images and stimuli to the brain each and every day. According to ayurveda, the energies of the three doshas can be found throughout the body, but each has particular seats within the body or spaces within the body that it tends to congregate. The eyes are the seat of the pitta dosha, which is mostly associated with the fire element.

Those that hold a prakruti (body/mind type at the time of conception) that is more pitta dominant tend to experience more issues with their eyes. Even if one does not hold the prakruti of pitta, but has a vikruti ((body/mind imbalance) of pitta, they can experience issues with their eyes and/or vision. Common pitta aggravators are stress, anger, irritation, too much screen time, alcohol, spicy food, pollution, and too much sun or heat.

Here are three easy ways to keep your eyes happy and healthy!

The 20/20/20 Rule

Directions: Take a break every 20 minutes and look 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

Benefits:  Relaxes the eye muscles naturally.

Rinse Eyes with Room Temperature Water

Directions: Keeping the eyes open, splash water onto your and then blink your eyes. Repeat 3-4 times.

Benefits: Improves vision, reduces eye discharge, and prevents eye problems and reddening.

Trataka (Candle Gazing)

1. Sit in a comfortable seated posture and rest your hands on your lap.
2. Place stand and candle an arms length in front of you. The wick should be about eye level.
3. Begin by staring at the base of the stand for 20-30 seconds and continue to slowly make your way up to top of table, base of candle, top of candle, and then the flame. Each point you stop hold for 20-30 seconds.
4. Stare at flame without blinking, until tears begin to form.
5. Close eyes and try to observe the inner image of the flame at the center of your eyebrows.

Benefits: Strengthens eye muscles, forcing them to focus, as well as creates a balming effect that helps promote eye health.
