Understanding our Mental State with Ayurveda: Rajas Guna

The three gunas: sattva, rajas, tamas, are the primary qualities of nature. They show our mental and spiritual state, through which we can measure our propensity for psychological problems.

The rajas guna is the guna of action and it holds the qualities of change and turbulence. It is what makes us active, energetic, and willful.  While we need movement in nearly every sphere of our lives, too much movement or rajas can cultivate a state of being that is over sensitive, combative, egotistical, pleasure seeking, anxious and fearful.

If we are living in a consistent state of rajas, we are only striving for pleasure and fulfillment from the outside world.  When we don’t know how to find happiness and contentment (sattva) from within, we will often find that when our desires are not met there is pain and suffering. If we compare the rajas guna to the doshas, we can see that it holds similar qualities to the vata and pitta doshas. When our mind is in a rajas state of being, it is most likely that the vata and/or pitta doshas are also imbalanced.

Therefore, to move out of a rajistic state of being, we will need to balance both the vata and pitta doshas, as well as increase the qualities related to the sattva guna, as the more we are exposed to a guna, the more that guna will grow in our mind.

The Gunas are the tip of the ice berg when it comes to using Ayurveda to cultivate a more balanced state of being. Ayurveda focuses on all aspects of our being; body, mind, and spirit, to help us cultivate the healthiest and happiest versions of ourselves.
