Summer is a great time to take action! Naturally, you'll find that  you are more energized and motivated with the longer days and the increase in temperature. This increased energy and motivation due to summer season is what Ayurveda encourages us to recognize so that we can best determine what our body and mind needs to maintain balance.

In the Northern hemisphere, Summer is referred to as pitta season, as we tend to see more pitta qualities in our environment. The increase of these qualities within our environment then tends to increase these qualities within our bodies and minds, causing imbalances. 

Pitta Qualities and How They Correlate to the Season

Hot: Longer days and more sunshine creates more heat. 

Sharp: During the summer months, the sun is closer to the earth, creating not only more heat, but more intensity or sharpness. 

Oily: As the heat increases in our environment, our body produces more more oils. 

Pitta Qualities and How they Affect our Bodies and Minds

Hot: The warmer temperatures in our environment can cause body our temperature to increase and even our mental agitation to increase, making us more prone to: physical inflammation, nausea , dizziness, anger, and thirst.

Sharp: The quality of sharp is best known for its ability to cultivate transformation and change. During the summer months, this quality can make us feel more motivated as well as increase our metabolism and digestive power. 

Oily: When our body temperature increases, our body will naturally increase its oil production to lubricate the skin and protect it from dehydration and the environment.

How to Stay Balanced During Pitta Season

Dress cool: Wear clothing made of fabric that is  lighter in nature, lighter in color, and is flowy, giving the body room to breathe. 

Eat cooler and lighter foods: Foods that are cool, light, sweet, bitter, and astringent will help to balance out the fiery nature of Pitta.

Be cool: Summer is a great time to be active and be outside in nature, but it’s important to be mindful that you are not over exerting nor overheating the body with too many heat cultivating activities. To maintain balance, try to save your more intense or competitive activities for early morning or evening, when the sun is not at its peak. Try out some cooling activities such as swimming or other water sports.
