Qualities: Heavy, cold, oily, sticky, soft, moist, static. steady, slow, soft.
Features: Generally, Kapha people tend to have a larger frame and are full-bodied. They tend to have a rounder faces, big round eyes, and thick hair.
Personality: Kaphas love to love. They are caring, nurturing and tend to want to make everyone around them happy. Kapha can also be lazy, prone to daydreaming, and easily become attached to people, places or ideas.
When imbalanced, psychologically prone to: Procrastination, lethargy, excessive sleep, and problems letting go.
When imbalanced, physically prone to: Poor circulation, mucus, heart disease, arthritis, swollen glands, bone spurs, water retention, and weight gain (usually in the stomach and thighs).
Digestion and Metabolism: Kapha's digestion and metabolism tends to take it's time moving due to the qualities it holds: heavy and slow. This makes it harder for Kapha's to both digest food and lose weight.
An out of balance Kapha feels: Tired, insecure, clingy, depressed, unmotivated, lethargic, and withdrawn.
A balanced Kapha feels: Nurturing, loyal, compassionate, grounded, patient, and content.
Times of day Kapha is high: Between 6am-10am and 6pm-10pm.
Seasons/weather Kapha is high: Winter and early spring or when it is cold and damp.
Balancing breath practice: Bhastrika breath - Increases lung capacity, eliminates waste, clears inflammation in the throat, warms the body. (With an inhale lift the arms toward the ceiling, palms facing forward. Release exhale forcefully through the nose while simultaneously drawing arms down and curling fingers in to make a fist.)
Yoga practice: Should be energizing, strong, and warm. Postures should be repeated several times on each side for short durations.
Balancing essential oils: The cool, heavy and slow nature of Kapha is balanced by using stimulating, warming and cleansing aromatics - angelica, anise, basil, bay, bergamot, birch, camphor, cardamom, cedarwood, cinnamon, clary sage, clove, cypress, eucalyptus, fir, frankincense, geranium, ginger, grapefruit, hyssop, jasmine, juniper, lavender, lemon, lemongrass, lime, marjoram, neroli, myrrh, myrtle, petitgrain, peppermint, rose, rosemary, sage, sweet orange, tea tree, wintergreen, yarrow
