What is a Mudra?
Mudras are hand gestures and an amazing tools for balancing the body and minds energy flow.
Creating this gentle gesture with the hands (placing the tip of the index finger underneath the base of the thumb.) is one of the easiest and most accessible vata dosha pacifying remedies. In case you’re not familiar, the vata dosha is one of three energetic archetypes that we all carry. Each archetype or dosha holds a combination of two of the five basic elements. Vata consists of the elements air and space. When the vata dosha is vitiated or imbalanced, it can cause one to feel unfocused, anxious, bloated, and achy, specifically in the joints, lower back, and hips.
Ayurveda believes that like increases like, so in order to balance out excess vata, we need to bring in it’s opposing elements, through each finger’s connection to the 5 elements.
Thumb - Fire
Index Finger - Air
Middle Finger - Space
Ring Finger - Earth
Pinky Finger - Water
By bringing fire (the thumb) over air (the index finger), we are able to regulate any excess air that has accumulated in the body and mind, balancing the vata dosha.
