5 Ayurvedic Tips for Optimal Digestion

In Ayurveda, it is said that all diseases can manifest due to weak agni (digestion). This means,  it is imperative that we pay attention to both what we are putting into our bodies and also what is coming out. 

While we could spend several days discussing digestion from an Ayurvedic perspective, we’re going to skip the overwhelm and jump right into discussing what healthy digestion actually looks like and 5 simple things that you can start doing right now to improve it! 

What does good digestion look like: 

  • 1-2 bowel movements per day - ideally looking like a ripe banana.

  • No gas or bloating.

  • Lightness in the body

  • Body and mind feel energized and happy. 

5 ways you can start improving your digestion right now:

Tongue Scrape each morning when you wake up.

This simple task removes accumulated toxins from digestive track (ama) – these toxins would otherwise be absorbed by your body. It also activates saliva, which aids in digestion or keeping your internal fire (agni) burning.

Drink a glass of warm water with lemon after you tongue scrape.

This simple, yet magical drink, flushes out toxins (ama) built up in the digestive track and  stimulates your digestion and metabolism (agni). Lemons also have strong antibacterial, antiviral, and immune- boosting properties, making your body ready to take on the day.


Avoid eating fruit with other foods.

According to Ayurveda, different foods have different rates of digestion and fruit is one of the quickest to digest. When we combine fruit with other foods that take longer to digest, the fruit does not have a way out, as it has to wait for the other food to digest. This essentially causes the fruit to ferment, creating indigestion, bloating, and gas. 

Cook with more spices.

Spices not only make things taste better, but we can use them to enhance digestion, efficiently absorb nutrients, improve circulation, and improve hormonal balance.


Sip room temperature water throughout the day and avoid ice water. 

If we think of our digestion as an actual fire that is cooking and transforming what we put into our body into either nutrients or waste, when we drink a large amount of water all at once, it is like we are putting out that fire, making it more difficult to digest whatever is in there. When we sip on water throughout the day, it actually helps the digestive process.
