Ayurveda is a science that is based on the laws of nature. It teaches us that everything in the universe, including ourselves, is made up of the 5 elements: space, air, fire, water, earth. It teaches us to recognize these elements and their qualities and apply them to our health and well-being.
One of the ways in which Ayurveda utilizes the laws of nature and these 5 elements is with a simple premise: Like increases like.
We are constantly being influenced by our environment, stress, weather, people, food, etc., and registering those changes in our own body/mind. When we take the time to cultivate awareness and notice how the above listed affect us, we can then use this simple premise to regain balance.
For example, if you are feeling anxious and worried, drinking a cup of coffee will increase the qualities you’re already experiencing by continuing to simulate the erratic movement within your mind. A better choice might be a more grounding a nutritious meal.
When in doubt of what to do:
Treat cold with warmth and warmth with cold.
Treat heaviness with lightness and lightness with heaviness.
Treat mobility with stillness and stilness with mobility.
Treat dryness with moistness and moistness with dryness.
As with anything, listen to your body. The ultimate aim of a system like Ayurveda and/or yoga is to put us back in touch with our selves. These guidelines will get us back on track for the most part, but if you try something and it feels untrue to your body, trust that.
