What makes Ayurveda stand out from modern medicine is it’s holistic approach to health. While modern medicine treats the symptom, Ayurveda helps the individual cultivate a lifestyle and diet that is going to cater to their unique body and be their preventative medicine.
While science and society are starting to lean in the direction of holistic health, there still seems to be a missing piece. Just because we eat organic or use essential oils, doesn’t mean we are practicing holistic health. Holistic health focuses on the full picture – body, mind, and spirit. That meaning, when we eat organic and when we use essential oils, we need to have awareness of how we feel before we put those things into or onto our bodies and how we feel afterward. This awareness is the key to cultivating optimal health and happiness.
In addition, we still live in a society where health is rated by looks and weight. While weight management is important, it is not the end all, be all. If we are thin and look good, if we don’t feel good, what’s the point?
From an Ayurvedic perspective, all diseases stem from weak agni or digestive fire. To cultivate health within, we need to be sure that not only our bodies, but our minds as well, are able to properly digest everything we put into them - experiences, food, drink, etc. When our digestion is strong, then our ojas or our primal vigor is strong and the health we are feeling on the inside will radiate on the outside as well.
Cultivating Ojas or health from the inside out checklist:
How’s your digestion? How many bowel movements do you have per day? Do you bloat easily or at a particular time of day?
Goal: Bowl movements should be 1-2 time per day and look like a ripe banana.
How’s your skin? Dry? Oily? Acne?
Goal: Glowing and soft to the touch
Do you go to bed and wake up at the same time every day?
Goal: Be in bed by 10pm and wake up by 6am.
How do you feel when you wake up in the morning?
Goal: To feel light, bright, and ready to go.
Do you exercise? If so, do you feel irritated, energized or depleted afterward?
Goal: To feel light, energized, and focused.
